During the restoration of my Austin 7 it became apparent that a number of items located were in need of derusting prior to repairs and installation.
Particle or soda blasting is not always an option depending on the item in need of attention however I recalled an article published earlier from a specialist in chemistry and fellow restorer about molasses derusting.
I measured the longest item in need of rust removal and made a dispenser that could be sealed. A 5 litre plastic bucket with lid and a small plastic kitchen container with lid was also sourced and a number of holes drilled into the lid of the small container as it was to be used for very small items and the whole container immersed within the bucket along with larger items.
When ready to go I purchased the molasses and diluted it 2.5 to 1. After letting it mature for two weeks a number of items were immersed in the containers and left to munch away at the rust for another two weeks.
When ready the items were removed and hosed on the lawn to remove the molasses sludge and allowed to dry in the sun. The rust was gone and the steel was returned to a useable item. When dry a light wire brush treatment was carried out and the parts etch primed for future use.
Caution. This stuff has a strong odour hence my being able to seal the containers deemed necessary. It is also essential to wear rubber gloves as the odour will remain on hands for days otherwise and it also stains clothes.
